Understanding the NDIS: A Beginner’s Guide

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can feel confusing when you are learning about it for the first time. Understanding how the NDIS works, what support may be available and how funding can be managed can make the process easier to navigate.

What is the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides funding to eligible people with permanent and significant disability to access supports that relate to their disability and help them pursue their goals.

An NDIS plan includes information about your goals and the funding available to purchase NDIS supports.

Who can access the NDIS?

Access to the NDIS depends on meeting the eligibility requirements set by the NDIS. These requirements consider factors such as age, residency and the nature and impact of a person’s disability.

If you are considering applying for the NDIS, it is important to check the current eligibility requirements through the official NDIS website.

How does an NDIS plan work?

If you become an NDIS participant, your plan outlines your goals and the funding available for your NDIS supports.

Your supports and funding should relate to your disability and be used in line with the rules of your plan.

Understanding your plan can help you make informed decisions about the supports and services you choose.

How can NDIS funding be managed?

There are three main ways NDIS funding can be managed.

Self-managed

You manage your own NDIS funding, including paying providers and keeping records.

Plan-managed

A registered plan manager manages payments and financial records for your NDIS supports. You can still choose your providers.

NDIA-managed

The NDIA manages your funding and pays your providers directly.

A plan can also use a combination of these management options.

Choosing NDIS supports

Understanding your goals and support needs is an important part of using your NDIS plan.

Depending on your individual plan and needs, supports may include assistance with daily living, community participation, allied health services, personal care, support coordination and other approved NDIS supports.

It is important to make sure the supports you purchase are appropriate for your needs and are in line with your NDIS plan.

Getting help with your NDIS journey

You do not have to understand everything about the NDIS at once. Learning about your plan, funding, support options and provider choices can help you feel more confident when making decisions about your supports.

At Caring Hands Community Support Services, we understand that every person’s circumstances and support needs are different. Our team can help you understand available support services and discuss how we may be able to assist you.
